Location and what to see

The Velvet Orchid sits on Rachamanka Road in the Phra Sing quarter, inside Chiang Mai's roughly 1.6 km moat-enclosed old city. This historic core is laid out in a simple grid and is easy to explore on foot, with famous Lanna temples, cafes, massage shops and markets all within a short stroll. Guests rate the location an excellent 8.7, and it is a favourite with couples.

Temples are the highlight of the neighbourhood. Wat Chedi Luang, with its huge ruined stupa, is around a three-minute walk away, while Wat Phra Singh — one of the city's most revered temples, at the western end of Ratchadamnoen Road — is about a nine-minute walk. The Three Kings Monument and the City Arts & Cultural Centre are both a few hundred metres north, and Chiang Mai Gate, with its lively food market, is roughly 800 metres to the south.

For green space, Nong Buak Hard Public Park in the south-west corner of the moat is a short walk away and open daily. On Saturday evenings the nearby Wua Lai (Saturday) Walking Street fills with street food and handicraft stalls just outside Chiang Mai Gate. Chiang Mai International Airport is only about five minutes by car, and both the railway and bus stations are within a short drive. The cool, dry months from November to February are generally the most pleasant time to visit.
